Spring is here (hopefully!), and what better way to make the most of the longer days than incorporating a bit more movement into your day? Even if it’s just alighting the bus a stop or two earlier than usual, the benefits to your mental and physical health are numerous. We as humans are supposed to walk, so let’s get moving!

Let’s spell out the benefits of walking to work…

W

Workplace Wellness…
If your job involves sitting at a desk for most of the day, the benefits of movement in your day have been proven to improve your health and increase your productivity. We all know a healthy worker is a happy worker.

A

Air and Vitamin D…
A chance to breathe some fresh air into your lungs before heading to work. Exposure to the sunlight will also ensure you take in some vitamin D, helping to protect your bones and teeth, not to mention improve your immune system.

L

Lower Stress Levels…
Walking helps to boost the number of endorphins flowing through your body contributing to the relief of stress. Take time to let your mind wander whilst walking, absorb your surroundings or listen to the birds. You’ll have head space to think about your tasks and mentally prepare yourself for your day or week ahead. No frustrating traffic jams or waiting for a delayed bus. You’ll feel like you’re getting somewhere.

K

Keeping Fit…
A brisk walk increases your heart rate and is a form of cardiovascular exercise helping to lower your blood pressure. It’s recommended that we aim for 30 minutes exercise a day to keep fit and healthy. It’s a simple way for busy workers to add a bit of physical activity into the day, especially if your day involves sitting at a desk with little time for movement.

I

Improved Wellbeing Overall…
Not only reserved for work, the benefits of walking will be seen in your personal life too through increased general wellbeing. Walking has been shown to improve memory and develop connections in the brain. Light exercise also promotes better sleep, so you’ll wake up feeling more refreshed for your day ahead.

N

No need to spend money on transport…
You’ll save some pennies by leaving the car keys at home, or not taking your usual bus or train route to work. Perhaps you could even save on the gym membership too!
